Semta, the Sector Skills Council for science, engineering and manufacturing technologies, today published its UK Science Industries (Bioscience) Report. The report contains a projected net requirement of 50,000 people to cover employment growth and retirements within the UK science industries between 2010 and 2016. This comprises 12,000 managers, 9,300 technicians, 9,200 professionals, 14,800 people at National Qualification Framework (NQF) Level 4 and 4,700 at NQF Level 5. Read more

"Jamie Wilson is the last of a dying breed – the only young man left working in a state-run nursery school in the country. Figures published yesterday by the General Teaching Council show the 23-year-old from Liverpool is the only male under 25 in England working with under-fives as a state school nursery teacher. They also highlighted the dearth of male role models for primary school pupils of any age. Read more

"The UK's largest recruitment company has said that although businesses are replacing employees who have left, they are not creating new jobs. Alistair Cox, chief executive of Hays, told the BBC the current job market was about "job churn".
His comments came as Hays reported an 80% drop in annual profit to £29.7m. Read more

"The Browne review into the funding of higher education has led to a debate on whether a university education provides value for money. In the last three months, there have been two comment pieces by arts students complaining about the "paucity of teaching" within their degrees and suggesting that the disparity between arts and science contact hours should be reflected in the fees.
